What do you think of "The Gorgon"?

I recently watched this film with my friend during a special on television showcasing a number of horror films and noticed it was from Hammer Films. I didn't know what to expect but I found the acting to be outstanding, especially from greats like Peter Cushing and of course Mr. Lee. The plot was pretty easy to understand in my opinion, and the pace of the movie was reasonable. I would recommend the film to those who have not seen it but I would really like to hear from those who have watched the movie and their opinion on it. It would be intresting, I think, to see just what this movie's effect is on certain people so please if you aren't to busy, reply to this post. Thanks and take care everyone! Looking forward to celebrating a certain person's birthday this upcoming sunday! God bless!

Re: What do you think of "The Gorgon"?

I attended this film when child... and this makes a long time... It passed in TV at night in "late show." I remind this is a good film. A great performance of Mr. Cushing. I waited anxious to see the character of Mr. Lee, Mr. Philips (if I don't make a mistake), but he was long a lot to appear in the screen.
I remember a sentence of Mr. Lee in the film., when beating in the door. It was more or less like this: "You will leave me here, stopped in this cold... "

Re: What do you think of "The Gorgon"?

The Gorgon?! Love it...........

We enjoy watching this film every once in awhile.... It is a bit 'campy', but for the 'time' it is great! Mr. Cushing and Mr. Lee always give a brilliant performance...

There are a lot of the 'old' films we love to watch...Yes, sometimes you can see wires and such, and by today's standards of CGI, they aren't as scarey.... but they are still such fun to watch! On rainy weekends we sometimes have 'old movie' fests.....

For the technology and budgets these films had to work with, I think they did a fabulous effort....And of course when you have a brilliant cast.....Need I say more?...

Cheers,;)

I love that film it is one of my favourites, I wonder if anyone can tell me if it is available on dvd. I would love to add it to my collection. Mr Lee was wonderful as was Dear Peter Cushing and Barbara Shelley . the plot was pretty straight foreward and the effects were O.K not exactly ILM quality but for the budget good. Kaity
.

I own an older VHS copy and have always enjoyed this film, its good to see CL in a more Van Helsing type role.

Re: What do you think of "The Gorgon"?

It's a great film. Wonderfully photographed and far more sombre than a lot of Hammers output of the period.
Barbara Shelly is magnificent and it's just a shame the producers weren't up to her suggestion of using real grass snakes in her hair as the Gorgon. They opted for another actress ( Prudence Hyman ) and some ropey remote control serpents.
Christopher Lee is as good as ever although I think it's one of his weakest roles in a Hammer film.
Maybe it was the wig and moustache but it didn't gel for me.
Those minor quibbles aside I would highly recommend it and I can't wait for the promised DVD from Columbia in the new year.

I agree, Mr. Lee's look did detract a bit from his character.

Re: What do you think of "The Gorgon"?

The Gorgon is a very good film for the time it was made. Mr. Lee looks a bit funny with the wig and the moustache. But apart from this he showed once again his ability also to play a good guy. I agree with Matt, the serpents in the hair could have had been made better. It's always great to see Mr. Lee and Mr. Cushing together on the screen.
I recommend this film.

I liked the film, oppourtunity to see Mr Lee and Mr Cushing work together, the effects were silly, but on the whole the film is good and I love it

Re: What do you think of "The Gorgon"?

I could remember seeing this film many years ago and had good memories of it. I have seen it a few times since, one very recent and still find it holds up nicely. I think it has bags of atmosphere, which I suppose is what you would expect from a Hammer production. The scenes depicting the victims encounter with the off camera monster I found very suspenseful and effective.
As was mentioned the visual encounter at the end is a minor drawback, but on the whole I think this film is also a minor classic. The performances of everyone involved were excellent.

Re: What do you think of "The Gorgon"?

The Gorgon is classic hammer the way i liked it,
Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee Bernard Robinson sets, James Bernard's very atmospheric music, Terence Fisher's direction as for special effects, of course i agree about the Serpent's but i never expected the effects to be extraordinary when watching a Hammer films, but i always enjoyed the ride into Hammerland!!!
i grew up watching those films, and i am still very fond of them, i have to get "Hammer dose" every once in a while!!!

Re: What do you think of "The Gorgon"?

This is one of my favourite Hammer movies. It's refreshing to see Cushing and Lee switch roles (though Peter's role is more of an anti-hero than an out and out 'baddie') and Mr Lee has fun playing the good guy.

I find it easy to to over-look the of-it's time special effects as the movie draws you in to it's fairy tale world.

I bought the video sometime in the mid-nineties, so a DVD release would be wonderful.

Absolutely, The Hammer sets were, I think unique to horror films of that time, as were set pieces used in Hitchcock thrillers. And I don't think have been surpassed even today for the atmosphere they created. As you say, you are completely drawn into that world. And a lot of that style and atmosphere is down to the mixture of perfect scene setting music, acting, directing, producing and so on.
