Dear Juan and all members of Sir Christopher Lee Web.

It has been brought to my attention, that Bray Studios (Home of Hammer) is under threat of closure and demolition, as part of a housing redevelopment scheme. I'm sure you will agree, that to lose such a studio, which has been so instrumental in the growth of British acting talent and created so many memorable films, would be a crying shame. A site has been set up, I think, via facebook,  for people to voice their opinion and garner support for the prevention of this closure. Thankyou for your time.

Re: Bray studio, threatened with redevelopment

I've been aware of this for some time now.As sad as it is I think it's inevitable. On the positive side the manor house itself"Down Place" will be returned to a private dwelling which was what it originally was.

I only wish I could afford to buy it.

If the development goes ahead, and I'm pretty sure it will, it's bound to be a lovely location for some high market properties.

I only hope they keep the Hammer tradition on the street names. You know, Cushing Place, Lee Crescent and so on.

Hi Matt,

I guess, if it were ever to happen, the names you suggested would be of some consolation. If the closure goes ahead, I hope they open the studio to the public. I would dearly love to take a tour of the grounds and buildings, where so many films, I watched as a child and still watch today, were created.

I agree with you that it will be a shame to let it  get demolished and lost forever.I my opinion,it is worth to be preserved and be reused again for the building of new acting talents and continue that heritage which hammer once started.

Re: Bray studio, threatened with redevelopment

As I said it would be a sad day but things change.

The only recognisable part of the studios these days consists of the manor house " Down Place" and the adjacant buildings which are very much extensions to the main house. This part would remain unchanged and would in fact revert to the private dweiiing that it was prior to Hammer taking over.

I have visited the studios three times and had a terrific time walking those hallowed grounds but the actual studios are nothing more than huge garages. The house is the thing that people recognise from the movies and personally I would love to see it taken care of.Rest assured if the price was right I would put in an offer.I would love to have the viewing room put back to the way it looked as Peter Cushings study in The Mummy.

Here are a few views of Down Place from one of my visits. The pic with me in it should need no introduction as it's the famous study windows that Mr Lee's Kharis crashed throught. The one with the cars parked features the doorway Dracula carried a victim from in Prince Of Darkness and the last shows the rooftop window of the Barons lab from Curse Of Frankenstein.

Can you imagine having this as your home. One can only dream !

Great photo's Matt. Didn't know that about the entrance, used for Prince Of Darkness. Will be looking out for that, next time I watch. When you manage to buy Down Place .... can I have an invite to the house warming? LOL.
