Post Memorabilia

Being a film buff can be an expensive hobby. Quite apart from the price of a cinema ticket or DVD purchase, there’s all the memorabilia that can be collected if one so desires.

Over the years I’ve added to my own little collection slowly but surely and have come to realise that I enjoy some of the collectables almost as much as the movies themselves .

I realised early on that I couldn’t collect everything so I decided to settle for posters and film stills. Yes I have other items such as props, books, models etc but something about those original advertising images does it for me.

I’d be very interested to find out if anyone on this site has a similar passion for collecting. Needless to say items featuring Christopher Lee come out at the top of my list so I thought I’d share my top ten movie collectables with you all.
  • Original Quad Cinema Poster For “To The Devil A Daughter” Personally signed by Christopher Lee.
  • “The Hammer Story” Hardback original book. Signed by over 40 Hammer cast & crew.
  • Press Book For Clint Eastwoods “White Hunter Black Heart” Personally Signed by Clint
  • “Dracula” ring & signed by Christopher Lee Dracula AD 1972 photo
  • The Exorcist original poster & FOH still personally signed by Linda Blair
  • Sketch of Dracula star Janina Faye signed by the artist and Janina
  • All of the photos I have taken meeting cast & crew from my favourite movies and the locations.
  • Curse Of Frankenstein Lobby Card personally signed by Hazel Court.
  • Original Quad Poster for “The Spy Who Loved Me” Signed by Caroline Munro & Richard Kiel
  • Early publicity portrait shot of Peter Cushing signed by the great man himself

Re: Memorabilia

Excellent post, Matt and what a great collection! I especially like the signed Clint Eastwood press book. Wow, did you actually get to meet the man himself then?

You are right about it being expensive being a film buff. I love to collect autographed photos and autographed memorabilia and have built up quite a decent collection now. Below are some of the highlights.

The following autographs are ones I have had the great pleasure in obtaining from the stars themselves in person:

Christopher Lee, Leslie Phillips, Jack Douglas, Tim Healy, Pat Roach, Valerie Leon, Jacki Piper, Sue Holderness, Roy Heather, Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules, Robert Llewellyn, Ben E King, Mick Foley.

My collection also contains autographs of the following people who I haven't met:

Chevy Chase, David Jason, Ronnie Barker, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Lennard Pearce, Matt Lucas, David Walliams, James Herbert.

Now, where's the money coming from for the next piece of memorabilia?

Thumbs up Re: Memorabilia

Some great stuff their, Matt and Stuart. I see you must be a Red Dwarf fan Stuart.
My brother and I are big fans of the show, and have all the DVD's. I have met Danny John-Jules, and almost bumped into Craig Charles in middle of Manchester. I was a bit of a Dr Who fanatic a few years back, and have met many of the actors and got autographs, in a certain book.
As for Mr Lee, I only have the Dracula ring, like yourself Matt, and many DVD's featuring the man himself. I am considering buying one of the Autographed photo's from the store. But it is a great wish that I can get one in person one day.
All the best.

Re: Memorabilia

Hi Steve

Yes, my wife and I are huge Red Dwarf fans too. We usually get to meet the cast at the Memorabilia show at the NEC in Birmingham. One time Craig Charles didn't turn up, so Robert Llewellyn drew a sketch of him on the table instead!

Leslie Phillips, Jack Douglas,

Cheers Stuart.
I'm as big a fan of Clint Eastwood as I am of Christopher Lee. In my perfect world Mr Lee would have played English Bob in Unforgiven instead of Richard Harris............ it's fun to dream.
My friend and I were lucky enough to meet Clint at the world premiere of White Hunter Black Heart in Edinburgh. Both of us were shaking with excitement but tried to play it cool. I think we failed.
Clint was great and as cool as you would imagine. I was able to ask him if he would ever make a horror film to which he said he would if the script was good.
I guess one hasn't turned up since.
My mate asked him about classic motorbikes which they are both into.
It was an amazing experience which was followed by the movie itself with Clint sitting about 5 seats away from us. Ah memories !!

Leslie Phillips & Jack Douglas !! That's just too cool.

I should have added the DVD of me sitting beside Mr Lee getting my poster signed as a fave piece of memorabilia. It may only run for 2 mins 41 seconds but I've watched it more than anything else in my collection.

I am a huge fan of Clint's too. Wouldn't it be marvellous if Mr Lee were to appear in a movie with Clint Eastwood? Any casting directors reading this, take note!

I envy you getting to meet Clint. What a fantastic experience.

Re: Memorabilia

Just for you Stuart. One of the pics I took of Clint as he was leaving his hotel to go to the premiere. After taking this photo my mate and I had to run the 2 miles to get to the Cinema before Clint. Thanks to the Edinburgh traffic we beat him to it.

Great photo, Matt. Thanks. I bet you were glad to be able to sit down in the cinema after the 2 mile run!

That was 18 years ago. I'd need an oxygen mask these days

I am also an avid film Memorabilia collector. I specialize in DVD's and books. I collect all sorts of DVDs from TV titles to music titles but I specialize in horror films and films starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. I have well over 500 DVD titles.

I also collect books of anything to do with Hammer films and also Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. I also collect autobiographies, mainly of sports and film stars.

Re: Memorabilia

I feel right at home here !
I,too,collect movies and memorabilia,books,autographs,etc.
My movie collection numbers about 500 ,running the gamut from horror,of which
I have about 200, to westerns,comedies,etc.
I have autographs from Joan Sims, Barbara Windsor,Joanna Lumley,Patrick MacNee
to Rod Taylor,Bill Cosby,Ray Harryhausen ,etc.
My biggest problem appears to be space for it all.
By the by,I do have quite a number of Mr.Lee's movies including his Dracula
portrayals, Lord of the Rings,Sherlock Holmes,The Man With the Golden Gun,
etc.

Re: Memorabilia

I have a few things i collect.I will post a few links to the photographs i have taken of them last summer, and uploaded to photobucket.
The first thing,is a very rare Irvin Flying Jacket from 1933.There are only two of these in existence, from what i know. The person who has the other 1933 irvin like this, has shown me pictures of it,and it is an exact replica, from the zips to the mysterious black coating. This leads us,and other collectors to believe, that this particular irvin jacket house maker, uniquely, and individually, coated the leather of each jacket they made with some kind of black paint. It is very early short pile sheepskin fleece.
The irvin flying trousers in some of the pictures of this 1933 irvin jacket set, where taken for a bit of fun for other collectors.I will post a few links in the future,of those irvin flying trousers.

I hope the links work,as i do not want to over load this thread with heavy loading photos.
The waist belt is a modern ugly addition, someone who owned it previous to me stitched on to it.If i can find a genuine waist belt in the future,i will replace it.All zips, collar rings, leather, sheepskin and yellow marking, are original. The rips and tears in the leather, and also the wear in the sheepskin, have never been repaired.no leather or sheepskin has ever been replaced,so the original sweat and blood from the pilots, from the bi plane era to the spitfire era,is still contained in the jacket.
The trousers are original, and are the extremely rare black sheepskin.the sheepskin is from the war period, before sheep were bred to have black wool, hence, through the workings of genetics, the black wool looks brown or black, depending what angle it is photographed at.black wool in those days, was of the exact same gene as the brown wool on sheeps, hence the brown colour shows up a lot.The back of the jacket, shows the single seam running down the full length of the back, which is how early to 1940's irvins were made.two big back panels of leather and sheepakin, which were all much better quality than the later 1941 and onwards irvin jackets were made of.

Wink Re: Memorabilia

I have a few autographs, most of which i have gotten myself thru sheer luck:

of course my Saruman personalized by Christopher Lee.

I have a signed poster by all the band members of Fleetwood Mac. (I've only met Lindsey Buckingham & John McVie however)

I have a signed Batman Returns movie theater one sheet signed by Michael Keaton (Batman) when I met him in 1997.

I met George Lowe (Space Ghost) about 5 years back and he signed a 5x7 and did a whole page of doodles for me. Very interesting, and funny guy.

I met Adam West around the same time (the original TV Batman) and had him sign an 8x10. Not a terribly friendly man, but an interesting experience.
