I remember watching this film many years ago, must have been the late 80's, but have not seen the whole film since. It is Christopher Lee's and Alan Arkins performances that I remember mainly and that wonderful song sung by Mr Lee at the end.
My memory of it as a whole was rather vague. But I can remember thinking that it was a bit of a dissapointment. I have just recently purchased it on DVD, my intention being really just to enjoy Mr Lee's performance of that song again. After watching it this evening, I found that I actually enjoyed the whole movie a second time round. Yes, it did suffer I think from a production point of view and some of the gags were a bit leaden and drawn out. But I also thought that some gags really worked well. I thought the songs were good and in the right hands, this could well have been a minor classic. Mr Lee and Mr Arkins perforemances were excellent and very funny. The running gag with each of Mr Midnights unusual pets being fed to each other as the film progressed was rather clever.
Alan Arkin has always been one of my favourite actors. He seems to have an edgy side to his comedy. When you watch him, you are not absolutely sure what he's going to do next.
I think this was the first time I had seen Christopher Lee in a comedy ... and singing... and was pleasantly surprised when I first saw it all those years ago. This time round I am able to appreciate it more and found the whole thing very enjoyable.
I have just finished playing the last song of the film several times. Christopher Lee's performance of that song is such a highlite. And what a voice.
Does anyone else have a view on this film.

I think it really has some very funny moments in it. The highlight being his song.

The DVD I have has been specially done for widescreen, with director supervising.
It really is a good quaility DVD. I got it off Ebay. I think that most of the songs are very well written and sung, Mr Lee's turn being the best of the bunch. I also like the song "In To The Blue".
One other thing, I know now where they got the idea for The Incredibles, which I also like.
