LOIS MAXWELL
(1927-2007)
Requiescat In Pace
Hello everyone,
I have just learned the very sad news that the Canadian-born actress, Lois Maxwell, has died aged 80. Ms Maxwell was born in Kitchener, Ontario (Canada), on February 14th, 1927. Although, to many people, she was best known for playing "Miss Moneypenny" in fourteen Bond films, Lois Maxwell was already well established as an actress.
Lois Maxwell started off her acting career on radio, and left home aged 15 when she enlisted in the Canadian Army. She soon joined the Army Entertainment Corps, and travelled to the UK and Europe during World War Two. She subsequently enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA), and then travelled to Hollywood in the late 1940s, where she was awarded a Golden Globe as "Best Newcomer" for her role as "Julia Kane" in the Shirley Temple comedy,
That Hagen Girl.
Amongst her many screen performances, she worked with such greats as Stanley Kubrick, and also appeared in many television series throughout the 1960s, appearing alongside her friend and colleague Sir Roger Moore in episodes of
The Saint and
The Persuaders. As well as acting, she also worked as a newspaper columnist for the
Toronto Sun newspaper.
Lois Maxwell appeared in a few films with Mr Lee, the first one being
Corridor of Mirrors (1948), which was the first film Mr Lee worked in. She also featured in Kubrick's film of
Lolita (1962), which includes a scene at the cinema where
The Curse of Frankenstein is playing onscreen. And Lois Maxwell was "Miss Moneypenny" in
The Man With the Golden Gun (1974), where Mr Lee played the eponymous villain, "Francisco Scaramanga" - the man with the golden gun, although the two shared no scenes together.

I am sure that Lois Maxwell will be very sadly missed by many people all over the world:

With sad affection,
