Next Year's Harvest

Saturday I watched THE WICKER MAN for the zillionth time, and I started thinking…After Inspector Howie was sacrificed , what DID happen to next year’s apple crops?

Howie, the Christian, predicted the crops would fail because the people had abandoned the one true God. He said when next year’s crops failed again, it would be Lord Summerisle’s turn to be sacrificed.
Summerisle wouldn’t accept that. Looking anxious, he kept saying “They [the crops] will NOT fail!” And the people backed him.
My gut feeling is, the crops DID fail. And what happened, then? WAS Summerisle the final sacrifice? Did he go willingly to his death? Or did he escape, while there was time?
Played so flawlessly by Mr. Lee, Summerisle is such a complex character, I can’t make up my mind.
Am curious what you guys think.

Re: Next Year's Harvest

Amigona ( big friend) , Cindy...

In times behind this subject left me always in the doubt: " Was there a continuation of this film? " I imagined that it would be made The Wicker Man II, but I came to know that there was not part II.
I am also nervous in to think which would be the end of all that.
The glance of Summerisle when Howie spoke the words that you mentioned above, it is now in my mind...
How can I say? The reason indicates me something, but the heart doesn't let me to want this!

Oh, pain!

Cindy, I think that is the absolute beauty of 'The WickerMan'.

A complex, intellectual film that has an ending that brings closure to the film..... and yet at the same time, the imaging of the story allows you to carry on long after the film has ended and consider what the future might bring.....

There are so many facets to the story that it becomes 'personal', with the answers based on 'your' feelings, intellect and background....

In many ways I am glad there was no 'sequel'...I think this is one film that the 'magic' of the story would have become lost if the 'same ground' were covered.. I am glad that Robin Hardy opted for a 're-imaging' of the story in 'Cowboys for Christ'......But that is just my opinion....

Excellent topic and thoughts Cindy, Thank You

Cheers,;)
Helen
