Wink Vacances de Monsieur Hulot, Les

Hi Everyone,

I came across this quite by accident during one of my 'searches' ...
and it is listed in the IMDB, but I never really payed attention to it before.....

But I thought it was interesting that this film from 1953; Vacances de Monsieur Hulot, Les, (Mr. Hulot's Holiday) when made for release in 'Brittany' (and the US I am sure) (in 1954), Mr. Lee had dubbed the entire film in English (and is uncredited)! Since this was originally 115 minute film, that seems to me to be quite a bit of work!

It must have been a fore-shadowing of things to come....For Mr. Lee is phenomenal doing all of the voices for Stravinsky's A Soldier's Tale....

Anyway, I thought it was interesting...Considering that in other films Mr. Lee has personally performed in, HIS voice was dubbed in languages he speaks fluently! One example would be: Hercules in the Haunted World...

Cheers,;)

Helen

Post Re: Vacances de Monsieur Hulot, Les

Hello everyone,

Yes indeed, Helen! I've never seen more than a few clips of Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot in the original French language version, but I am most interested to find a copy of the version dubbed by Mr Lee just to see how he does all of the voices. This is yet another reason for you to pick up a copy of "Making of a Legend" DVD Helen, because Mr Lee actually discusses his vocal work for this film, and for another one which is placed in conjunction with this one, called Manuela (I am not exactly sure why Manuela appears alongside Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot (1953) because the IMDb gives the release date as 1957 for the former - perhaps the film was delayed). In any case, Mr Lee also provided some of the voices for Manuela, directed by Guy Hamilton, because some of the actors couldn't speak English very well or very clearly due to rather heavy accents, and they needed to "clear up" the dialogue (i.e. make it intelligible). According to Rigby, it seems that Mr Lee did quite a bit of dubbing work during this period, although he gives no titles besides Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot. Anyway, I've always been most impressed by Mr Lee's vocal talents, especially on his numerous audio book recordings, where his ability to create different characters by altering his voice is second to none. Take care:

Warmest regards,

Andrés

Andres, Interesting what you say...This is one of the movies I have been looking for.
Yes, Mr. Lee does wonderful vocalizations, which is why I could never understand that his voice was dubbed over in some movies. Needless to say with terrible results...

Your comment on 'thick accents' made me think of The Crimson Pirate (One of my favorites!) which I was just watching again recently and that the character Ojo (Nick Cravat) portrayed a 'mute', because his accent was so thick!

Thank You for your comments, so helpful as always...I did just discover (unpacking another box) that I do have the DVD, 'Making of a Legend'! I guess I will have to sit down one of these days and watch it!

Thank You again....

Cheers,;)
Helen
