Smile "The Crimson Pirate" (1952) on BBC2, Sunday, 20th February

Hello everyone,

Just thought I would point out that The Crimson Pirate (1952) will be shown on television, BBC2 on Sunday, 20th February (12.20 - 14.00), for those of you with access to this British channel who may not know and would wish to see it.

The film stars the great Burt Lancaster, and Eva Bartok, and is described in the What's On TV guide as a "pirate adventure." The summary given is "a buccaneer falls under the spell of a rebel's beautiful daughter." Mr Lee has a small role in the film. I have never seen this before, and I am looking forward to it, especially to watch the duel between Mr Lee and Mr Lancaster.

Here's to happy swashbuckling action ahead!!

Warmest regards,

poeraven :)

You're going to love this one, Andres. It's a great film, great fun, and looks fabulous in color. (Or colour). Enjoy! :)

Nice of the BBC to cancel this movie because of the snooker.

Cheers
Colin

Hello everyone,

Actually Colin, I don't know if this was the case in all viewing regions of England, but, as far as London is concerned, the film was screened. I know because I watched it (and taped it.)

It was very enjoyable, what could be described as a spoof or comic take on the whole pirate swashbuckling genre. My only complaints really were that Mr Lee didn't get a lot of screen time, and also that the duel mentioned in the TV guide between Mr Lee and Mr Lancaster seemed to have been cut out of the screening (although I will have to review the tape carefully to see if any parts made it - I saw Mr Lee fighting and Mr Lancaster fighting, but NOT against each other.)

Mr Lee looked very dashing in his green velvet suit and tricorne hat, although I read that he found the suit slightly uncomfortable to wear due to the heat of the Mediterranean sun. He also sports a black goatee in the film.

Anyway, just thought I would write that I was able to see it, and that it seems a shame if it was cancelled in other parts of the country by the BBC in favour of the snooker. Until next time:

Best wishes to all,

poeraven :)

What is snooker? Is that something similar to billiards?

littleb, sort of. It is a type of "pool" played with 15 red balls and six balls of other colors and a cue ball. The table looks the same, but the actual game is very different.... :)
Cheers,

Re: "The Crimson Pirate" (1952) on BBC2, Sunday, 20th February

Its great to see Mr Lee swashbuckle. Even though Errol Flynn gave Mr Lee a twisted finger after a duel for the rest of his life.
Snooker is kinda similar to billiards littleb although its a bit more involved. U have to pot 15 red balls that count as one point. every time u pot a red ball u pot a colour ie; yellow, green, brown, blue, pink or black ranging from 2 points to 7 points for black. when colours are potted with reds still on the table the coloured balls must be placed back on the table in their designated place. when all reds are potted then all colours can be potted in the order as stated yellow-black. whoever has most points at end of the game wins.
