The Truss is an unknown quantity at this point
I just heard in the chat room on theonering.net (TORn) that Ian McKellen (at one of his one-man stage performances recently) described Sarumann's death as definitely via the spike wheel. Has anyone heard anything else similar? I know the rumour has been circulating for months, but this was the first time I have heard of a major character-actor "confirming" the gossip.

I hope not. I certainly would like to see him get his just deserts in the same manner as in the book!

That is rubbish. Neither Sir Ian said that, nor that death will ever happen, that is all I am prepared to say.

Take a look at this thread:

That's right. That rumour that Sir Ian had apparently said that was started by Ian Smith, who made a mistake when writing about some sort of interview.

However, there have still ben plenty of rumours about what Saruman's death will be. We know it's not going to be the wheel, but many endings for the character were apparently shot. I'm afraid that no one knows how Saruman we die, and I doubt that we will until the movie comes out.

As I've said before-and will no doubt say again-the only death I want for Saruman is the one that he got in the book. Anything else is really un-neccessary...

I heard this as well, although as a third hand reference. Well, I read the thread that the admin referenced and it seems to have started well before TTT came out. It seems I know as much now as when I first heard the rumour in TORn's chat room... no one knows for sure! Ha ha.

I've seen the spike wheel pics on TORn, so I guess they HAVE made contingencies for alternate endings. I thought maybe we had some type of proof when Sir Ian supposedly said something about the spike wheel, but I guess I should know by now to trust everything I hear in a chat room! :-)

I too hope for nothing more than the ending in the book. It's the only proper way, in my mind.

I've seen the spiked wheel pictures too. They seemed to me like joke pictures leaked to the public on purpose. Not that they weren't taken on set or whatnot. . . but that they were not acurate as to the fate of Saruman.
Personally, I think Wormtongue will slit Saruman's throat in Orthanc. I have seen (and they are out there) pictures of Wormtongue on the floor of Orthanc with knife in hand looking rather disposed to immediate violence. This would be a much better way to condense the third book rather than have the scouring of the Shire.
We'll just have to wait for Return of the King in theaters but I have faith in Peter Jackson.

Here's the picture:

I think that this is the most likely way Saruman will die too.
