I just bought The Three & Four Musketeers DVDs recently, and haven't stopped watching them since! :D Besides the fact that Mr. Lee makes a fine performance as the elegant and vilainous Rochefort, and that many other fine actors are in it, performing equally well, I find that they are just so much good fun. I'm also obsessed with the novel at the moment; it's currently my favourite book! It's not a masterpiece, but it's a real good adventure story! And who says a good story has to be a masterpiece?
I did watch the 1948 Musketeer film on Monday, anyway, (and watched it the week before, too, on TCM) and, although it's good, it's not as good as the 1973/74 ones. I found the humour a little dated, for one thing, and it does seem quite a long film. There's so much material in the plot, though, that I'm not sure how they fitted what they did in! No wonder Lester's versions spilled over into two films! It's worth watching just to see Vincent Price as the Cardinal, though! ;) It made me wonder, seeing Price's Richelieu, what he would have been like in the same role in the later versions, especially in scenes opposite Lee or Dunaway; not that I'd want to displace Heston as the Cardinal - I thought that he was marvellous in the part - but it was just a thought.
Anyway, enough rambling... one for all and all for one! :D
