On August 5th Warner Bros are to release one of Vincent Price's most loved films The House Of Wax on dvd .
Along with the usual trailers and biographies has to be surely the best extra afforded this type of release ........ the full length 1933 original movie " The Mystery Of The Wax Museum " starring Fay Wray .
I , for one , can't wait for this disc . It's one of my favourite Price films and the original , in all it's two tone technicolor glory , is a landmark in 30s horror .

Although there are no firm details yet, it looks unlikely that the 3D version of HOUSE OF WAX will be included. Maybe some 3D scenes as extras perhaps

Any details on whether or not there's been any additional restoration to MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM?

If I rememeber the story correctly; it was considered a "lost" film for years and when news surfaced that a print had been discovered in Jack Warner's personal vault, a number of groups battled for the right to restore it. After actually viewing the film, however, and discovering it wasn't the masterpiece it had been hyped to be - these groups backed off. The restoration at that time was essentially called off and a very cheap print was made in which the colors are diminished to a point they barely exist at all. That is, to the best of my knowledge, the print that has been circulating ever since. It is certainly the print that I've had on tape for years.

I'm delighted the original will be included on the HOUSE OF WAX dvd, it is a personal favorite; but I do hope some effort has been made to restore the color Matt alluded to.

Anywys i'm still waiting for Masters of the world I think it's called?
the i think only other film did with Charles Bronson. that is i think re-mastered i say i think cuz when rented it the print was terrible
on the vhs of it. but they play it on SHOWTIME BEYOND which only shows odd movies. that don't air on regualar showtime. anyways the picture quality on that channel is magnificent. it just needs letterboxed an it's all good. that's a fave of mine as U can prob tell. an i only mentioned it cuz of charles bronson who is not one my faveorite actors. oh by the way before i forget. i was looking at Hollywood Bitchslap an yea that is the name of the site. an they if U look it up on their new dvd releases well this one is put out by FOX well anyways LAURA is coming 2 dvd sometime this year. i forget when though. i think near the end of
the year. sorry for rambling on if some think i did.

Regarding The Mystery Of The Wax Museum .
The colour of the print currently in circulation ( on t.v. many times ) is just about as good as it gets . I don't recall it ever being deemed a " lost " film but , maybe a while back .
The film was shot in two tone techniclor which was one of the earliest processes . Aside from black , white and all the accompanying shades , everything else is a combination of just two colours ..... red and green . This is why it appears , nowadays , to have a washed out appearance .
I hope they don't do anything too fancy with the print as the two tone look gives it a truly unique feel and that's how it was filmed .

I still have my laserdisc collection which includes the MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM/DOCTOR X double bill. Both were in lovely condition for their age and both were in their 2-strip technicolour versions.

I assure you, until the early-to-mid seventies MYSTERY... was indeed considered a "lost" film. If I'm not mistaken, the book Classics of the Horror Film details it's finding and restoration. Though that book was written twenty years ago and additional restoration work may certainly have occured since.

I too, have a copy of DOCTOR X and it's color is a wonderful example of the old technicolor process. My copy of MYSTERY however is - to be kind - awful. Hoping the new dvd will be of a much higher quality.
