Well, it's really quite simple, Vandevere...DVDs are region-encoded, and can only be played on players that support the particular region. North American players require Region 1 DVDs, for example.
Now there are multi-region players out there, the best solution for U.S. fans of films like The House that Dripped Blood, which initially are released only in the UK Region 2 format.

I also have a code free player myslef (Malata N-996) and i am quite happy about it, it has opened the door to a lot of DVD's that i would not have been able to get if i'd kept to my little Toshiba alone.
For exemple . the italian import widescreen "Dr. Terror's house of horros" dvd which is the best release i have ever seen so far.
Most of them come in their original language with removable subtitles, so it's quite practical!!

But one thing that surprises me is that none of the US DVDs I bought so far offers any subtitles. In Germany it's common that almost every DVD offers at least German subtitles, which is a service for aurally handicapped people I suppose. Even though I can understand English quite well I would prefer the ability to switch subtitles on now and then on US titles, just in case...(...someone like Billy Boyd is speaking! ;) )
Is it really that unusual for the US that subtitles are included on DVDs? Or did I just had bad luck with my movies?

If you happen to buy one which only have one region ie 1- 2 its very easy to change it to region free your self.
I changed my, and now it can take all regions.
You can do it to most DVD players, even the one on your computer.
You can also do it to VCRs.

star38 | How does this work? Do you need to buy an adapter of some kind?

The easy way is to put one in from another part of the world.
Your from the USA, so get one from England.
Yours will be region 1 and English is region 2, or look in the book that came with it or on the box.

star38 | Well...I dug up the box the DVD Player came in, and it says Region 1. And since I can't really afford another DVD just to pick up English DVDs, I guess I'll be restricted to the American Market for a while...
I bet I'll still be able to get the films I want anyway...

Right, your DVD player is too new to get a code.
The other thing you can do is to take it back to the shop and ask them if they can make it region free, they may charge you a few $ but it can be don't. Sorry coz it new i cant get a code.
Most shops in England will charge you a few pounds to do it but it can be done by your self.
I did it so it not hard.
