here's another CLASSIC for ya i watched THE HOUND OF BASKERVILLES from 1959. did I spell that right? i watched this classic last night. I taped it off tv the channel TCM to be exact.
and it was quite refreshing to see Mr. Lee in a movie where he actually lived through the whole thing! an wasn't a villian! we all know he plays villians well but it was nice to see something different from him for a change. an what was even more surprising is they even gave him a woman in it. for those who hasn't seen it i won't spoil it. but too bad that Hammer only made one sherlock holmes movie they could have made a good series.
and with cushing as holmes no less. i can't wait untill i pick the dvd up!:D

GET the DVD, with all speed, Stimpy. It's gorgeous.
Yes, it's sad indeed that Hammer produced only the one film, but it was not a great financial success. Peter Cushing is for me the definitive Holmes, by the way.
Mr. Lee did play a few romantic leads...you should also check out The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll, if you can find a copy, another early Hammer film, made just a year after Hound.

that's one I have been wanting to see for a long time also. it was
different to see him with a romantic lead. I'm so used to see him do horror or any character that he's portrayes. in the films i'm use to his character is already married. another one of his i want to get is Theatre of death on dvd but no store carries it out here and Eugene the story into perversion isn't it called? there are quite a few of his i need to get. one of his i do have is called THE GIRL has anyone seen that one ? i picked the vhs up last year and haven't got around to watch it yet that one is one of his later roles from 1986. but i have a feeling it is indeed RARE.

The Hound Of The Baskervilles is perfect in every way . Lee is perfect in the role and Cushing simply IS Sherlock Holmes .
The DVD is a must buy and it's one of those films I never tire of .

another one of his i want to get is Theatre of death on dvd but no store carries it out here . | Theatre of Death is an excellent film, rather under-rated. It's still available on DVD, Stimpy. I have it. Check out Amazon or eBay, or whatever your favorite online source. You'll find it.
Actually, I just checked Amazon...it's there, at about $25. Ships in 2-3 days.

last time i bought something from amazon was in 2000 i bought the Nightmare on Elm Street dvd box set for 100 bucks or something like that and they prob sent it in 2-3 day i'm sure they did but they had to send it to 25-35 different places 1st of course! we had to call amazon to ask what the hell was going on and they gave us a 20-25 bucks discount i can't remember which and it had tons of stickers on it from the different places it had been. that is why i'm reluctant to buy anything there again.

Had a chance to get it from Movies Unlimited a few years back, but never picked it up. Now they only have it on DVD. From what I've read, it sounds like a very interesting story, with Mr. Lee in a non-vampire part - I think.
About The Hound of the Baskervilles, I thought Mr. Lee was very good in it as the romantic, naive Baskerville. The spider part was intense, to say the least. But the write-ups I've read about the dog, it seems reviewers have been so critical of it. To me, the hound's make-up was great. And scary. But boy, beware of those bogs.

Stimpy, regarding Amazon...I've bought from them at least fifty or sixty times and have not once had an issue. I'd say you had some bad luck there, friend...give 'em another try!

LCD...do you mean to say you don't have DVD yet? Hope that's not the case, 'cause you're missing out BIG time! This film, particularly, benefits enormously from the DVD treatment, being presented in its proper 2.35:1 "scope" format. On tape, you'll only get about 1/2 the original image.
Nope, Mr. Lee's not the vampire in this one.

Another personal favorite featuring a heroic Mr. Lee: THE MAN WHO COULD CHEAT DEATH (Hammer); the same year he did HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.
The Overlook Encyclopedia of Horror states: "Lee simply walks through his part", but I consider this criticism to be a load of hog-wash. True, MAN WHO COULD CHEAT DEATH is not Hammer's greatest effort; but it is beautifully photographed, lavish looking and I personally think Mr. Lee is excellent. Plus, he survives and gets the lovely Hazel Court in the end.
Overall, 1958 was a very romantic year for Christopher Lee.

Believe it or not, no we don't have a DVD. We actually also still have a working BETA video machine, and watch beta videos, too. (Basically home-taped, like House of the Long Shadows.)
We'll get a DVD probably when they've worked out all the bells and whistles to the max. I guess we'll eventually be forced to, if there are any plans to phase out VHS.
I'll look forward one day to getting Theatre of Death; just wish I'd bought the VHS when I had a chance to. Sounds like it gets the best treatment on DVD, though. Maybe Santa will be really nice this Christmas ;)....

I'm about to have the conversation I have with numerous people every single day of my life, here...I'm a video retailer, so can assure you, LCD, that yes -- you're going to have to upgrade to DVD sooner or later. Hopefully sooner. :) VHS is already being phased out. The industry standard is DVD now, and we expect VHS to be well on its way to obsolescence within a year or two max.
You know, a good DVD player can now be had for less than a hundred bucks...in fact, I've seen quite a few recently for less than eighty! You'll never regret it, LCD...and you'll never look back!

Looks like we'll have to look into a DVD sooner than expected. Dave, since you have an inside buzz, is there anything beyond DVD we should worry about - as in getting ready for the thing that will replace DVD? DVDs do come with a lot of great extras on them, though.

There are other formats, sure...somebody's always inventing something...but you can be completely assured, LCD, that nothing's going to supplant DVD for many, many years to come. It's taken the world twenty years to get over VHS...standards aren't easily toppled once their firmly entrenched. It's all about the buying habits of the general public; once a format's been embraced and thousands of our hard-earned dollars have been poured into it, we're not very willing to look at anything new.
No, buy into DVD with confidence, LCD. And yes, they have lots of cool extras to enjoy, but that -- for me -- isn't the primary benefit. The real attraction is the huge difference in quality, both video and audio. The difference is really beyond description. You just have to see (and hear) it.
