My brother and I after watching the FOTR got into a discussion about Aragorn when he was in the Prancing Pony. Since neither of us read the books we were wondering about this, was Aragorn sent to the Prancing Pony by Gandolf? Was he there by coincidence? Or did he know to go to the Prancing Pony on his own? If anyone out there can help me with this question I would be most truly grateful.

In the Books, the implication was that Gandalf sent Aragorn to the Pony as an added extra safeguard just in case anything went wrong. Of course, it DID go wrong because Gandalf had intended to meet the Hobbits At Bree. But his plans were forcibly changed by Saruman. So it's just as well that Gandalf had the foresight to send Aragorn to Bree...

To clarify a little bit more, in the books the events in the first movie happen over a span of nearly 20 years. when Gandalf first suspects that Frodo has the One Ring, he asks Aragorn and the Dunedain (Rangers) to keep a close eye on the Shire. So for many years before the incidents at the Prancing Pony, ARagorn had been keeping an eye on everything.

Just an addition to what the other person said. ;)

Thanks for the clarification. So the movie is taking place in a way shorter time span, then that of the books. This is interesting to know, once the Return of the King is released I will then read the books, for all the other details. Just think 11 more months.:D
