I think that Gandalf new that the dwarves had woken up the Balrog, but he probably didn't know that it had been taken over by orcs.

I think maybe he did know about the Balrog but thought he would be able to defeat it (which he did, of course, but perhaps not the way he would have expected it). I don't think he was very surprised about the destroyed mines. Maybe he just had to let the ringbearer choose his own way... hm

Thats a very good supposition...it was, after all, the ringbearer's journey and they were there to protect him...

I believe Gandalf knew that the Balrog existed in the mines, but I don't think he knew that the mines had been destroyed. I couldn't really find anything in the book that stated that he "knew" the mines had been laid desolate and the dwarves slaughtered.

i think gandalf only risked the passage through moria after all other routes were blocked and hoped that they would be able to travel safely and unnoticed, however pippen ruined that idea
