Has anyone seen this recently? I haven't watched it for a million years and I remember being VERY disturbed by it as a child. Was I just being all imaginative, or is it a scary film? Particularly a bit where C.L. steals the horrible skeleton thing and then it falls off the coach in the rain! Argh!

Yes,this is a spooky movie!

Despite the monster looking a bit ridiculous by todays standards,
the film does manage to convey a very creepy atmosphere, particularly the scenes involving Peter Cushing's daughter when she begins to go mad.

Christopher Lee is also supremely cold and heartless in this one, shooting one of his inmates without a second thought and locking up his own brother so he can steal his thunder.

One of my favourite CL/PC collaborations

I have seen this film, actually,I got it myself in a VHS,and I must agree that this film is really spooky as you said.I think that this film is probably the best of those three films, where both Mr. Lee and Peter Cushing were in in the same year.

It 'creeped' me out too when I was little.
I remember getting an ache in my finger which was spooky.

Anyone know if and where you can get it on DVD?

The monster *does* look kind of odd, but I'm used to that in older horror (especially Brit ones-- sorry, but visual FX were not often their strong suit). The premise is interesting and unusual, though, and makes for an enjoyable film.

A very good film indeed . Check out my thoughts on it in the review section . As far as the monster goes , well , regardless of the country of origin , low budget horrors of the 70s always managed to convey something acceptable . I'd rather that than anything cgi .
It was due to be released on dvd earlier this year but it did'nt happen . Hopefully we'll see it soon .

Another excellent 70s gothic chiller. There were definate plans to release this title on R1 and R2 DVD, but both seemingly have been cancelled. I have the old laserdisc release.

One of many Lee/Cushing films still awaiting ANY DVD release (others include Night of the big heat, House of Long Shadows, Gorgon, Dracula AD 1972, etc)

Without any doubt, what makes this particular film so disturbing is its examination of mental disorders. The daughter's descent into madness, her mother's and ultimately father's mental collapse, and the notion that evil itself is a disease...it's all wrapped up in a very creepy, chilling little package. One of my very favorite Cushing/Lee collaborations of the period. Makes a helluva double-bill with Horror Express.

Sad about the DVD. I also have this one on the old laserdisc release.
