Since AOTC is still a couple of months away from DVD release, I have been watching the Original Trilogy quite a bit.
While watching A New Hope, something struck me -
What if Darth Tyranus was the villain instead of Darth Vader.
Now I realize the tremendous ramifications that would cause in the Star Wars Universe and all the dynamics would change - but could you imagine Christopher Lee in the role of Darth Tyranus in place of Vader? I am talking about Tyranus as seen in AOTC, not Mr. Lee in the Vader costume.
Could you imagine Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing ruling the Empire? What about Mr. Lee and Alec Guinness in the Death Star Hangar Duel?
Just remove Darth Vader from the movie and try to picture Darth Tyranus in his place. Not even going beyond A New Hope - this would have been incredible, but as the films continue, Tyranus as Luke and Leia's dad - Wow!
Just a thought.

I think it would be a definite improvement. I'm very likely in the minority here, but I was never all that impressed with Darth Vader as a villain. For me the real villain of A New Hope was Grand Moff Tarkin. Vader was just a thug in a black suit. A scary henchman, yes, but he lacked the intelligence and style of a true master villain.
And while we're on the subject, check out this website for "villain supplies." Everything you need to be a master villain from pre-fab secret subterranean headquaters to piranha pools. Hilarious! CLICK HERE

Grand Moth Tarkin is my fave villain in original trilogy, both because of his character and fact it was Peter Cushing.
Vader then was just a mysterious heavy representing the dark side and really played a role later to be copied by Darth Maul character (without dying obviously).
I don't think Tyrannus would have fit into ANH purely because Tarkin was the visible face of evil. I think the vader character did a good job of representing the corrupt dark side (with all his hints of power of malevolence) and the fact they pulled it off with a guy all in black and in a mask and a cape, without it being too stupid looking or ridiculous is a great achievement.
Tyrannus fits in nicely in Ep II and we'll all have to wait and see how much he features in Ep III

Interesting thought - and, I admit, it would be cool. Perhaps it could be an idea for the Infinities comic series, although they have done A New Hope... no harm in re-doing it with Tyranus, though! Nothing like a good 'what if? session in the Star Wars universe! :P
So, if not Tyranus in Vader's place, how about Tyranus in Palpatine's place, having power over Vader and the Empire...? That I'd like to see... and he already comes equipped with the necessary Force lightning! ;)

That's all fine and dandy, but the fact remains that Darth Vader is probably going to always be the popular Star Wars villian. I understand everyone's arguments, but the thing with Vader is that he's instantly recognizable. Like Superman, and Batman, and several other world-reknowed characters, Darth Vader stands out. And Vader not being a smart villain? What about catching Solo and the crew at Bespin? He had the trap already set for them. He was perfectly villianous. He was evil right until the very end...when Luke showed him the folly of all his ways.

Believe me....I meant no disrespect to Vader, I just thought about how cool it would be to see Christopher Lee with Cushing and Guinness in a Star Wars movie.
I could picture Tarkin yelling - "Tyranus, release him", as he chokes Admiral Motti with the Force. Or Tyranus and Obi-Wan fighting on the Death Star. Now I do realize the did battle in AOTC, but to See Mr. Lee and Sir Alec go at it would have been Awesome!
I must admit, Tyranus and Yoda was Incredible and I look forward to seeing more of Mr. Lee in E3!

As much as I love Mr. Lee's performance, and he is the best Star Wars villian since Vader, I can't imagine the original trilogy without Vader. But it would have been cool to see Cushing and Lee together. What I find even better is that they both have secured their place in the Star Wars saga.

I agree 100% that Mr. Lee and Mr.Cushing - both part of the Star Wars Universe - is Incredible! As many movies as they have done together - it really would have been something to have had them together in the same film.
Again, I am a huge Vader fan - I have many autographed items from Dave Prowse and James Earl Jones and would never want to see the films tampered with, but Just to imagine what could have been is very interesting.
