Gandalf must have been clever using middle-earth express delievery in 24 hours. :) But seriously he might have taken it back somehow how we don't know but after all he is a wizard. And a wizard never reveals how he does his tricks. Anything can happen in Middle Earth.

My friend asked the same question - remember, Gandalf also got his hat back after leaving it at Orthanc. Perhaps he has a supply somewhere? :P
It's just one of those lil details that gets overlooked in a film - in Attack of the Clones, some boxes disappear on the landing platform when Jango and Obi-Wan fight. Same difference. :)

Do not take Gandalf as a "conjurer of cheap tricks". (Remember this guy whipped a balroc, no small feat in itself.)
I first began trying to solve the mystery of the reappearing staff in December. Some say that he had spares. However, upon further review, I've finally concluded there is no answer more satisfactory than that he simply "willed" the items to return to him when he had need for them. It took just a little bit of the magic skills he possessed. Makes perfectly good sense to me, after all he is a WIZARD!
(Now, if I had those Gandalfian powers I surely would not waste them on inanimate objects. Christina Aguilera would certainly awaken to find herself in a strange location though. LOL)
This however does not explain the disappearing boxes on the AOTC set, which I failed to notice through four screenings. (I must be slipping in my old age.) Apparently the continuity people didn't catch it either or it would have been fixed. I further suspect the continuity people who missed this are NOT long for LucasFilms.
I'm sure George Lucas will use cgi to put all those boxes back into the correct location for the dvd issue...or he might wait on the "Special Edition" release due about 2006, which will naturally be the "letterBOX" edition. (ouch....sorry) |

The very same question has been asked at Ian McKellen's site.
He has been "internet journaling" his experience with LOTR since they began shooting. This section is called The Grey Book. There is also a question and answer area where visitors write in. I believe someone did ask him about the staff and McKellen answered back that the staffs were slightly different. The first staff wasn't the same one as the second, only similar.
I hope I'm remembering that correctly. If not then it's all my fault!
Anyway, if you haven't, everyone should visit his site. The Grey Book is quite charming. Mr. Lee is mentioned a few times. There are photos. While not as nifty as this site it is really well-done. http://www.mckellen.com |

These kind of things don't bother me too much, although once you notice them, they do make you think. :D
I didn't notice the AotC thing, Dave, so I too wasn't supremely vigilant - it was someone at a SW forum I visit who did note it, and now he mentioned it, I can't help but notice it! :P

Thanks, you read my mind. I've watched LOTR a bajillion times already, so I decided to pick it apart one day. That is one of the things I noticed. Other things that bother me are:
1. No Tom Bombadil
2. Not enough fighting wizard scenes. Which to me is like a mans equivalent of female mud wrestling. Call me weird, just don't call me late to supper!

I would consider it more of an editing error as far as Gandalf's staff is concerned. It looks like the same staff to me, and perhaps it was something they neglected to think about.
I agree with Seph, there wasn't enough of the wizards fighting in the film. I also love the part on the top of Orthanc when Saruman says his friendship isn't lightly thrown aside, and then holds Gandalf over the edge of the tower!

Everyone I know has heard of the car in the background but no one I know has seen it. I've looked pretty hard and never managed to spot it myself during the numerous times I've watched this film. It always seems to be the friend of a friend's second cousin's boyfriend who has seen it, so maybe it is another urban myth like the granny on the roofrack :D.
I'm told it is between where Frodo and Sam set out for Bree and when they meet Merry and Pippin. Someone else also said they saw a can of peaches or something like that somewhere in it. I wonder about people who want to watch out for cans of peaches instead of watching the action, but each to their own :).

I've never heard of anyone who's actually seen the car. Maybe it's a LOTR urban myth.
They certainly could use as SUV for that trek.
