I just ordered this C.L. film on DVD from www.ezydvd.com.au , where it's on sale (AUS$ 18-19). I've heard a lot of bad things about this film, but for this price it's worth getting just to see Mr Lee. The Australian DVD is, alas, full screen, but it is the longer international version, not the shortened American version (called Tale of the Mummy).
Anyone care to comment on this film?

An interesting footnote. I read a while back that the production company ran out of funds during post production. Watch the CGI effects and you'll see what I mean. CL's scenes seem to have been part of this "economizing". All in all, an interesting effort if not a great film. The premise behind the mummy in this one is a fresh angle tho. I have the US truncuated version altho it is 2.35:1 widescreen with 5.1 DD sound. Some sacrifices are worth making to avoid pan and scan or fullscreen to me. Besides, having seen the longer cut, I'm quite happy with the version I have. There is no additional CL scenes between the 2 versions.

A longer version!?! Good Lord! I've had enough trouble staying awake through the truncated US release version, so I'm not sure that I could stand the additional minutes! :o
Seriously though, new angle or not, this bored the socks off of me, although I thought both Mr. Lee and Sean Pertwee were great. The film had potential, but never quite got there, due in part no doubt to the totally odd casting of Jason Scott Lee. I normally like the guy, but he was completely at sea in this film. Pity...
Cheers!

I have the longer version on vhs. Picked it up at that time from the bargain bin.
The movie is allright. Not that good nor that bad, just allright.
It's the fact that Mr Lee is in the opening scenes. Otherwise i wouldn't have bothered buying it.
The Mummy computer FX are really good though. :)

I remember reading about this film in Fangoria magazine. I still have the interwiev with Mr Lee. This film never reached the silver screen over here, it went straight to video. I rented it and I didn't like it. Shelley Duvall as the seanse woman or whatever it is wasn't very good. Mr Lee was wonderful of course, crawling around on the ground in half.:) . In the end the movie is just simply allright.

I bought this movie just for Mr. Lee's participation, and found it pretty dire, like it has been said the special or not so special effects are worryingly bad and I felt somewhat embarrassed for Mr. Lee having to go in such and awful manner.
Cheers

Well it isn't so bad after all. I think it has a few good scenes. When The Professor is saying goodbye to his young friend when the deside to enter the grave. And there's also some nice artwork in one scene. A beautiful oil painting of Mr Lee's character in the background and I think it's at the museum. The special effects aren't good at all but I haven't seen the sequal to this film to see if they're better. The bandages flying over Piccadily Circus is quite fun:)

May I assume this film was released to video as Tale of the Mummy? If I remember correctly, this one was directed by the man who made the original Highlander.
Same film?

This film was a HUGE dissapointment to me .The director ( Russel Mulcahy , Highlander ) had previously made some pretty good movies and he was a self confessed Hammer fan .I read about the project prior to filming and got very excited when he explained that it was Lees Mummy that inspired him to make movies .Then I saw the end result ,terrible. It just goes to show you ( as if proof were needed ) how terrific the original is .

Well, I watched this film last night, and I kind of liked it! (So sue me! ;) )
SPOILER
I thought Mr. Lee was wonderful in the prologue, really wonderful! As for the rest of the film, I didn't really like Jason Scott Lee that much, but thought Sean Pertwee was good, and Shelley Duvall and Michael Lerner weren't bad either. But what made me grin after seeing it was the EXTREMELY downbeat ending! I had expected some standard moronic ending where the hero gets there just in time and saves the day, but here he instead gets his heart ripped out and has it eaten by Talos! I didn't expect that, and I like films that surprise me. So, that's my opinion - and OK film which could have been better with a better leading man.
