I re-read this book for the 3rd time over the past 2 weeks. I was astonished by the tales of Turin and even more fascinated by Morgoth (Melkor). It's strange to think that there was an Enemy greater than Sauron, and that at one point he was the servant.

I have The Silmarillion sat on my bookshelf, waiting to be read. But by the time I get back to you, it could be next year... or beyond! :D

It does sound astonishing that even Sauron may not have been the greatest enemy of all time... I will read it eventually. But there's no guarantee that I'll understand it! I've heard it's a hard read! ;)

Morgoth was also known as Melkor. The latter name is a little less intimidating but still reeks of trouble. I noticed a lot of similarities between the Silmarillion and the Bible. Maybe not similarities persay, but more an influence. It's a great book, and sometimes it does read pretty tough. It's almost like reading the King James Bible or something, but it's an excellent set of stories nonetheless.

The Silmarillion also gives a little brief insight on the fall of Saruman. His betrayal of the people of Middle Earth. He grew in his lore of the Rings, and soon came to admire Sauron in a twisted sense; rather than seeing him as an adversary. Thus in secret, he began seeking for the Ring. All the while, he was telling Gandalf and the White Council that he felt the Ring would never again be found in Middle Earth. Also, once the Nazgul were set abroad again he withdrew into Isengard and strengthened the tower because he was afraid. I wonder if Sauron really knew Gandalf was playing both sides for his own ends?
