Brandon Jones is on a distinguished road
I just bought this DVD today and gave it a whirl. The commentary with Mr. Lee is great. I think that made it worth the purchase. Peter Cushing's performance was excellent in the film as well, which I had forgotten. That first scene with Mr. Lee was classic, where he is really smug and arrogant to Cushing about "losing his boot." haha!

I totally agree . The Hound Of The Baskervilles is one of Hammers best .The sets , the lighting , the direction not to mention the cast are all excellent .The DVD is long overdue and yet again shows what real filmaking is all about . It is nice to see Christopher Lee playing a " human " character so early in his Hammer career and I , for one , think that Cushings performance as Holmes remains unsurpassed . It's a shame that the propossed series of Holmes films never got made .

I like this movie too as I've mentioned in the Swoon thread, but there are a couple of things that bother me about it. The business about Henry's arteriosclerosis seems anachronistic. It's not in Conan Doyle's text. I would have preferred they left it as a mysterious heart ailment. Then in the last scene at the ruins, after Henry has been attacked. Stapleton has been shot and is lying on that big flat rock. They shoot at the dog and he runs off toward Stapleton. As the dog passes, Stapleton reaches out and grabs the dog and pulls it toward him. Looks awful funny to me.

Been a while since I've seen that version of Hound of the Baskervilles, but although I like it a lot I can't see Cushing as Holmes at all. IIRC he's too "nice". It's a good film, but regardless of plot, I don't think the Holmes is presents is even close to the one Conan Doyle wrote about..

Robert Stephens and Jeremy Brett, IMO, give the most accurate performances of Holmes (even though the scripts they worked with were non-canonical to say the least, heh heh).
