Sorry about my Ignorance, but...

How do you become "Sir"?

I have often seen Ian McKellen called Sir Ian McKellen, but I was wondering if Christopher Lee is a "Sir" too?

You have to be KNIGHTED in the Order of the British Empire by the Queen to get a SIR in front of your name. Charles wrote a very informative news item on this once.

This was the subject of much discussion over a year ago here. I just checked and it has aged out. I believe I recall the final word was it was not very likely that Mr. Lee would be knighted for political reasons.

However, Mr. Lee is a Commander of the British Empire. Interesting that in THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN Mr. Lee was trying to kill Roger Moore's Commander Bond and now both Mr. Moore and Mr. Lee are real Commanders! To quote Charles from one of his more recent articles, "Who would have thunk?"

It is also interesting to point out that Mr. Lee's mother was a real Countess so Mr. Lee could lay claim to also being a real Count! No wonder he is so convincing as Count Dooku! I have to wonder if putting a Sir in front of Mr. Lee's name would be a demotion in rank. Would not a Count outrank a Knight? I'm sure someone here would know the answer to that, I'm not sure myself though being a "Yank".

Here is a link to Charles news article. Hope it works!
