You can also catch a look at the cover, mixed in with other forthcoming releases, at the Retromedia site. Yet another DVD that combines both Sherlock Holmes and Christopher Lee. Am I excited? Duh!

Now if only MGM would get their act together and release a special edition (or any edition for that matter) DVD of Billy Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes I'd be positively giddy!

Cheers!

While I'm glad another Sherlock is coming out, I can't help but agree with Charles. TPLOSH on DVD is eagerly awaited here as well. Time was these films were shown all the time on television but for some reason they are now quite rare.

Billy Wilder films have a distinct style all their own. Mr. Wilder was one of those rare directors that didn't really care what anyone else would think because the only person he cared about pleasing was...himself! His films always painted a picture quite nicely and were artistically filmed.

Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace is going to be fun to watch but how much longer will we be waiting on TPLOSH?

Great news.
I have never seen this film, but recorded it this week from
German television.
Didn't had time to see it yet.
Downside is, that it has German voiceovers.

Long live dvd imports. :D

Sent an email to Fred Olen Ray over at Retromedia about a release date for Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace. Fred's response:

Quote:
Hi -- SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE DEADLY NECKLACE will be out the third Tuesday of August. We are restoring it the best we can, having transferred it an now
trying to remove as many scratches as posible, but it's an expensive project.
We're going to utilize the orginial poster art (I believe), but may work in a photo of Lee, because the painting's likeness is not a very good one.
   FRED
So August 20th appears to be the release date.

And Jacob, if you import the DVD you'll have the dubious distinction of then hearing Mr. Lee being dubbed into English too (by someone else I might add). Can't imagine it is any better than the German. Still, a fun and interesting film.

Cheers!

There's something we agree on Jacob ! I recorded the film the same night as you did. It's a great film but I always yearn for Mr Lee's voice !

I've just seen this film for the first time and I have to admit the soundtrack was really bizarre. The strange 'mid-atlantic' accents coming from English characters was hard to reconcile, particularly when Mr. Lee's voice is so familiar, I really missed it. And the music was like a left over from the silent era.

The story itself was fine, as was the acting (if you ignored the stilted and clumsy dubbing). However one thing did occur to me - I can't help feeling that unless your opponents are really, really unobservant (and obviously they were), being a master of disguise is probably wasted when you are a good head taller than most of the population:D.

I got the dvd last week,
The picture quality is far from perfect, but it is a lot better than the vhs copy (liberty video) that i had.
The film itself i must say, i really enjoyed.
Mr. Lee is excellent as Holmes, and it is a shame that it's not his wonderful voice that we hear on the soundtrack.
Thorley Walters is also good as Watson.

The other thing that is a little bit annoying about the film, is the music.
An orchestrated (more strings , less brass) score would have worked a lot better than some of the "Jazzy" music that we have to endure from time to time.

But, overall, if you've never seen this film before it's woth getting the dvd, it is a worthwhile addition for any fan of Christopher Lee.

Sylvain
