I don't see what value there is in feeling glad that Ian McKellen has appeared in less films than Mr. Lee. Ok, so you're disappointed that Mr. Lee is unlikely to be nominated for an Oscar. At least the film itself stands a good chance of gaining recognition (which of course it's already achieved from the most important judges: the paying audience).

Let us pay heed to what happened at the Golden Globes.

Even if Mr. Lee was nominated the odds against winning are relatively astronomical because there were no Hollywood insiders involved in LOTR. I'm sure some powerful studio people in Hollywood are actually jealous of the box office success it has achieved. I have little realistic hope that LOTR will win any Oscars in any category. I wish LOTR would win in every single category in which it is nominated because it is well deserved and I would be absolutely delighted! I'm just not very hopeful right now.

I believe STAR WARS AOTC is a much better vehicle for Mr. Lee's Oscar hopes since it is a Lucas project and he has always been a favorite son of the Academy.

Awards, or lack thereof, can never change the fact that LOTR is an amazing film achievement making history in every regard. Nor can the fact be ignored that Mr. Lee's breathtaking performance in this film series has been pivotal. LOTR is a series that will be a touchstone in motion picture history, much as the Star Wars series has long been. Mr. Lee's marks upon these two touchstones of motion picture history will be deep, profound and appreciated for generations to come.

Also, please be reminded that the Academy is notoriously vindictive when criticized. They are not very suttle about it either. Look at how they have ignored Spielberg for so many years based on the criticism he and his supporters launched at the Academy. So, let us not start a war over this. We might cause harm even though we are intending to do good!

I expect the next two installments of LOTR to just get better and STAR WARS AOTC to have lots of Oscar potential. The Academy can't ignore Mr. Lee's stellar career forever unless they have some sort of political agenda against him. So let us not give them an agenda or I assure you they will slam the door and bolt it in our faces as they have proven they are prone to do.

Prepare yourself now so you won't be surprized if LOTR should get stiffed completely at Los Angeles! I'm at peace with that already and I hope everyone else can also find their center on this. Don't get me wrong, I would like nothing better than for Mr. Lee to be nominated and win! If anyone ever deserved a best actor Oscar and a lifetime achievement Oscar we all know Mr. Lee is overdue and overqualified for both awards! I'm just far more hopeful that STAR WARS ATOC will bring Mr. Lee some of that overdue recognition.

Mr. McKellan was brilliant in LOTR and deserves to win!

People keep talking about the Hammer days, not because too live in the past, but too make sure we won't forget it.
Not talking about Hammer would be denying a great part of movie history.

As a Christopher Lee fan i really enjoy his commentaries for example on the Hammer dvd's which are out.
He speaks about the Hammer days and how wonderfull it was too work with all these people, who were like a family too each other.

I myself didn't grew up with Hammer movies, so reading and hearing about Hammer is to me at least, very interesting.
It's not that i'm the biggest Hammer fan in the world, but i do enjoy their movies.

Looking forward to the new Star Wars myself. :)
Seen LOTR 5 times now. Can't wait for the dvd...

Well said Jacob,
on my part though, i was lucky to grow up with Hammer films, i was born in 1956, so even if i was too young when the first ones (and best ) were made, i still was able to see most of them in the theater and on late night TV (with the volume very low not to wake up my parents), and i'm sure you'll agree that it was a very nice way to discover mr. Lee and all the other wonderful performers that worked for the little family studio.

But like you said, the magic of mr. Lee did not stop there, i was hooked on his talent, not on the "genre" i discovered him in, so from that point , any movie with his name i would go out and see, and my collection of vhs and DVD's with mr . Lee starring ,is as diverse as his carreer.

And Jacob , you beat me (for now) on seeing LOTR, i saw it twice so far, and i found it even better the second time.
I also watched last sunday 'The private life of Sherlock Holmes" again, and i loved it more also .

And of course i would be so happy , if mr. Lee would get more and more proofs of recognition from the world on an illustrious and unique , productive and un matched carreer.
One thing is for sure, he has my recognition and my admiration and my thanks for all the joy his talent has brought in my life.

Take care

Sylvain :)

I enjoy his commentaries very much and what I've read about his days there etc. He will always be grateful to Hammer because they made him known internationaly and that he worked with such talents like Barbara Shelley and many others.
The only thing that's been iritating is that some people only can talk about one particular character he played more than a couple of times etc. I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan as well LOTR and I hope I can go to the midnight premier of Star Wars as I did when Episode 1 opened.

If "The Two Towers" has Mr. Lee featured as prominently as I've heard in the rumors, we can always start putting bugs in the Academy's ears when that film comes out, just in time for consideration for 2003's ceremonies. I don't doubt he'll get one of those statuettes soon enough.
