Those of us who have seen a number of Jesus Franco films have, I imagine, formed our own opinions about his work. I'm curious, though, if Christopher Lee has ever made known his opinions of Mr. Franco's films or abilities as a director, writer and performer? Can any of you close to Mr. Lee offer any insights?

I can't remember from Mr. Lee's autobio or interviews whether he had any criticism of Franco's directorial style in terms of storyline and acting--but he was disappointed by Franco's reliance on zoom lenses--as opposed to the more standard tracking and dolly shots that one sees in higher budget films.

There's just no improving on moving the camera when it comes to creating a cinematic effect. Zooming was big in the 60s, even in Hollywood, but it looks stilted and cheesy now.

As my first film instructor taught me--"Always beware of Peter Pan and Zorba the Zoom."
No panning the camera, and no zooming the lense.

Best,

John F
