Hi Fred,
Blood on Satan's Claw, also known as Satan's Skin (and by a couple of other titles I believe), is a fantastic example of the early seventies British horror movie. It was made by a company called Tigon, who also made The Curse of the Crimson Altar (starring Christopher Lee!), and directed by Piers Haggard, who mainly did TV shows, but also directed Venom, with Klaus Kinski (a terrible film).
IMHO the film is right up there with Michael Reeves' Witchfinder General. I saw it on TV when I was about 14 or 15, and haven't seen it since, but my memory of it was that it is a very frightening film with a surprising amount of nudity/violence (although probably not by today's standards!). I also recall a strong evocation of the English countryside as a gloomy, not very benign place (which is certainly the case with Witchfinder General).
They don't tend to cut films too much on British TV, but I don't know whether the version I saw was the "full" version or not, but it definitely sent my friends and I to bed with a few shivers up our spines! I'd really like to see it again now and make a "proper" assessment. It is available on VHS, but not on DVD as far as I am aware. Sorry, don't know who owns it now.
Cheers
Lord Summerisle

Hi Fred,
To follow up on my previous post, I've been doing a bit of surfing and have discovered that Salvation Films, who are, I think, basically the same outfit as Redemption Films, are planning to release a DVD of Blood on Satan's Claw soon.
Unfortunately, judging by what it says on their website, www.salvation-films.com, they are not planning an American release of the title at the moment.
Hope this is of interest.

I saw it many years ago and thought it was an interesting, atmospheric production. Not wonderful, but worth a look.

Either I'm getting old, or Christmas is near, or it's 5:57 am -- or all three -- but I read that as, "Blood on Santa's Claws."
I'm going to bed. | |

summary- crazed department store Santa (Michael Ripper,in one of his few starring roles) goes after little boys and girls who have been naughty to him...... inspector Revel (Cushing) cooly tracks down this psycho Santa... "Did you know, that if you play scrabble with Santa, it spells SATAN ?"..... possibly the inspiration for DR PHIBES...
On the serious side , BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW is a moody, athmosphere drenched film with an amazing sense of period and
definitely one of my all around favorites... superb cast, and a haunting musical score (the title theme alone deserves to be released on a CD ...),plus did I mention the beautiful Linda
Hayden ?? As they asay in the Carry on films: 'Phwooooaarr!"
