I have seen Mr. Lee play Mycroft, the brother of Sherlock Holmes in THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES starring the late Robert Stephens, but I have never seen Mr. Lee portray the role of Sherlock Holmes....I believe however he did play the role....not sure.

Christopher Lee's first portrayal of Sherlock Holmes was in the 1962 film Sherlock Holmes und das Halsband des Todes which was released in a dubbed English version in 1968 as Sherlock Holmes and The Deadly Necklace. Mr. Lee also provided on-screen narration for The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes which was presented right around the time that Steven Spielberg's Young Sherlock Holmes was released theatrically in the mid-eighties. None of Mr. Lee's Holmes related films are currently available on DVD.

If interested, you can find the first two parts of my article on Christopher Lee and his association with the character of Sherlock Holmes at my Baker Street Dozen site. You can go directly to the first part of the article by clicking here

Cheers!

If they do appear on DVD exspecially , The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes , Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace ,Sherlock Holmes and the Leading Lady , Incident at Victoria Falls , with The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes on one of them as a Bonus , and also with some outtakes too if there was some , because some of these are on VHS but I can't get them because there either out of print Movies , or they're hard to find , so if they do appear on DVD some day please let me know .

Best Regards

Let you know? LOL.
I'll be shouting it from the rooftops if, or hopefully when, any of Mr. Lee's Sherlock Holmes related films hit DVD. I think folks will be hard pressed to not know... if I get wind of it. :D

Cheers,

Just who owns the rights to the Mr. Lees Sherlock Holmes films in order to get in touch with them to try to get them out on dvd. Just wonder how much of a demand there is for thses types of films.

Well, as to who holds the rights on Sherlock Holmes und das Halsband des Todes, I've no idea. Not that it is particularly worth championing in my view, as it just isn't a very good film. Although made in 1962, it reflects a type of film-making more associated with 1945. Having Mr. Lee dubbed by a completely inappropriate voice doesn't exactly help matters much either.

Mr. Lee's turn as Mycroft Holmes in Billy Wilder's film The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes is a much more rewarding experience, for both Sherlock Holmes and Christopher Lee fans. I believe the rights are held by MGM. It was released in a laser disc version a few years ago, with extra footage included, so I expect that sooner or later, a DVD release will happen.

As for Mr. Lee's two later outings as Sherlock Holmes in The Golden Years... films, I believe those are likely still owned by the production company Harmony Gold, which appears to have been an affiliation of investors. I wouldn't bet on a DVD release anytime soon, although I'm simply guessing here and could be completely wrong about the rights...and the likelihood of a DVD release.

Happily, we do have the release of Hammer's The Hound of the Baskervilles to look forward to next year.
