Dear Mr. Lee,
I know that you do careful literary research to prepare for your characters. Did you have the opportunity to share your insights, and did your suggestions help to shape the final production?
I was also wondering if you discovered anything surprising or unexpected in your studies, and how that helped to shape your performance.
Thank you! You have been an inspiration to me for the past 25 years!
Sincerely,
Maria A. Silbermann

Mr. Lee`s reply: "Obviously when I was doing The Lord Of The Rings, I discussed it with the writers, and the producers and the director. In point of fact, when I met Peter Jackson for the first time, which was while I was doing Gormenghast, I met him in London, in a room at the back of a church. I think he realised from our conversation, which lasted at least half an hour, how deeply involved I was in this story, in this great work, this saga, because it is, and indeed somebody`s taken from the Icelandic Sagas.
Maybe some of my suggestions helped, I`d like to think so. No nothing suprising or unexpected. The performance is what is on the printed page, transferred to another printed page, and then under the control of the director, an I like to think that I got it right." |
