Yes, Rebecca, I agree--that meant a great deal to me as well. Thank you, Juan.

Being in New Jersey, so close to the devastation and knowing many people who work in NYC, I just want to send out a message to my fellow Americans who belong to this club:

Stay strong and do not lose heart. We will prevail.

If anyone who has been affected by this needs a shoulder to lean on, please contact me through my personal e-mail:

cmsrecruiter@yahoo.com

I promise to respond.

Carmen

I appreciate it, too. I went to college about 100 miles north of New York City, and feel a strong connection to it, despite my current distance. I was just there a few weeks ago, in fact. My friends are all OK, but I won't be surprised if I hear that someone associated with the college was killed.

The outpouring of concern from around the world has been extraordinary, and the gesture here on the website is just one more example of that. Thank you.

Yes hope all is well with you all!

I knew an American who knew loads of people that worked in the trade centres!

Maybe this will cheer you all up!:

I was stroling along a new shopping centre in Hampshire which was deserted and I found a book shop, I went in and a while later I was facing a pile of 'The Cult films of CL' for just £3! (Each!) That made my day! I bought one of course.

Not as good as the Rigby book, but still a must!

Many of my Wells College friends live and work in the NYC area. My husband has 2 cousins who are NYC firefighters, and we were deathly afraid for them after we heard of the collapse. Fortunately they are ok. We Americans have always feared that New York and Washington, DC would be targeted by terrorists. It's overwhelming to see our worst fears realized. Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. I know that London has seen too much fear and loss of life from political terrorists. How do we reason with hearts so filled with hate and jealousy? How do we live with bombers with no further reason to live?

If its any consolation I sore a documentary saying that a volcano was going to erupt and destroy New York anyway! Infact they said it would cause a giant tidle wave that would destroy the whole East coast of America!

Thinking about it I dont see how that helps!... Sorry ;)

DISCLAIMER:

This consolation thought is flawed, I know nothing can be consolation for the evil that has occured in New York at present, but was intended strictly for humourous purposes only, no offense intended. ;)

(Is that even how you spell consolation???)

------
Glad your firefighter friends are allright, they must be useful!

If anyone wants to do something to comemorate the New York incident, you can light a virtual candle at the ICQ website. (I didnt want to add to the excesive Co2 emissions encapsulationg the planet)

I too would like to add my thanks to all those thruout the world who have expressed their sympathies for this tragedy. Those of you who know me personally know how much I love my country and our way of life. In retrospect the terrorists have done us all a favour in an offhand way. They have galvanized the entire world in a crusade to seek them out and destroy them once and for all. If this tragedy in the long run brings about a better world for us to live in and raise our children in, then truely the victims shall live on in history as martyrs at the altar of FREEDOM. I say this with a heavy heart as the death of even a single innocent being is repugnant to me. But rest assured, the United States will survive. And the FREEDOM of us all will be avenged and then assured hopefully for all time. I will now put my soapbox back under the table.

I couldn't believe what I saw on the tele a week ago. I thought:
"This isn't happening". "Is this realy the same area I have walked in and loved". I love the USA and New York but as a sweed I have raised my eyebrow on certain matters and thoughts heard from the citizens.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!! But please act reasenoble.

That's how it begins! First the "u"'s slip into the "-or" words, then he'll begin drinking tea instead of coffee in the morning! Oh no! Did Greg bite you?????

Yes, thanks to all of you, especially of our British family, for your kind words and consideration. This past week has been a tough one for everybody. As far as my own experience is concerned, I guess you can say that while all Americans know abstractly that terrorism is possible at any time and place nowadays, that what has happened has been a severe shock, to say the very least. It is hard for many Americans to imagine what we are now enduring because I think a lot of people take their safety and peace of mind for granted. For British citizens, I know that such acts are something that y'all have to deal with all the time, with various groups that I won't go into here. The increased security that we are seeing at our airports now is a shock to us, but one which your citizens endure all the time. In addition, such acts in your history have been par for the course--Hitler, the bombing attempt at the Greenwich Observatory in the late 19th-century (I did part of my dissertation on Conrad's The Secret Agent), hijackings and other such acts. Now, though, we have the added psychological impact of media, which shows the United flight crashing into the South tower over and over again, ad nauseum. I don't think I've ever been as frightened when I was driving to work at the University of Alabama; I didn't know anything had happened, and when I turned the radio on, I thought it was a joke or something like War of the Worlds. Very soon, I realized it was no joke, though. It was very similar to the situation where that gunman walked into a bible study at the Wedgwood Baptist Church in Ft. Worth and opened fire, but on a scale of thousands of times more so. People there thought it was a skit and didn't duck. You just don't think something like that can happen to you. Thank God Sir Ian McKellan, who was in NY at the time, escaped the carnage.
Anyway, one more thing: I know that many of you stay on the web a lot, and it just so happens that tips are coming in of people who may have had contact with these nutburger terrorists, sites like newsgroups, for example, where one kid noted that some guy was making very AntiAmerican remarks and threats that may have linked him to the events on Sept 11; and this kid was on Imladris.com, a Lord of the Rings website. If any of you encounter people like this on internet chatrooms or bulletin boards, do not hesitate to report them to the FBI and the Pentagon; collect the evidence, then sock it to them. I'm an ex-private investigator and I can tell you that nobody wants to be in the position of having suspected somebody and not acted on it, thinking that they're minding their own business, and then have something happen like this. Even if the suspects are lone fruitcakes, there's no reason to take chances with them. Better safe than sorry. Anyhoo, thanks for listening, folks, and thanks for your thoughts and prayers, too. We're all in this together.:frostyang

Sorry, Joe --

I see where the ambiguity lies -- I should have been clearer that it was the British spelling of "favour," not your point about them doing us a "favor," that I was teasing you about.

If I'd been as clever about it as Maria, all would be well!

Maria said,

And I only tease about the Britishism because our British friends are so close to us right now they're like the class in the next room, or the camp cabin next to America's, not one of the cabins across the path.

Everyone who knows you understands thoroughly how patriotic you are. I was worried that, after this event, you'd switch from a regular all-red-meat diet to becoming a cannibal. Your decorum and respect for the situation are commendable. I don't want to sound too complimentary, but I am very impressed by your dignity under fire.

Sorry again about my ambiguous post.
