Hi, Juan

Can we share the little tips and how-tos we learn with fellow members here? For example, if you post more than once within a thread, select "Do you want email notification of replies?" for only one of your posts, otherwise you'll get multiple e-mails for each reply posted by others, and they can add up quickly in a long thread.

Also: If your e-mail program supports filtering, as does Eudora, for example, you can direct your post reply notifications to their own mailbox for cleaner management. If you filter on the subject Reply Post Notification, then mail from officers of the club with the from line @christopherleeweb.com, will not go into the reply post notification box and will be noticed separately.

Finally, if you plan to preview your post after each modification before the final post, realize that the Yes/No radio buttons revert to the default "No" after each preview, and you need to select "Yes" each time you wish to preview a change, or the "Submit" button will take the post live.

If you'd prefer that we not share these things here, please delete the above tips.

Thanks!

"Post Icon" Hint:

If you want to use the new "Post Icons" outside a thread you start (not the emoticons), and you preview your post, you need to reselect the icon before hitting "Submit" the final time. The radio buttons for those icons are not "sticky" after previews, and revert to the plain gray document icons.

There has to be a deafult posticon for the hack to work. The forums are coded in Pearl and this uses a flat file database, the less things in the database the faster the forums.

I've tried using a faster database by moving to PHP4 and MySql, that used too much memory as opposed to processing power. Yes, it was a bit faster but during the invassion of the LOTR fans, the site crashed a few times. The balance between speed and bandwidth dictates that there is no point in creating a table just to remember who and which posticon people used in their posts.

Didn't mean for you to change it -- just sharing how to get around it. Thanks for the peek inside, though. Fascinating!

I think you're just way too used to me whining about things -- bringing up suggestions/complaints, etc., throughout the Upgrade Forum!

And, oops -- I edited it -- perhaps between your reading it and posting a reply.

In the original post, I started out saying I wasn't sure about it, but, yadda yadda yadda. Then changed it to, "If you want to use..." and added the header "'Post Icon' Hint."

That could explain it...

  *sheepish look*
