Hi all,
I have read with interest the proposals that Hammer's new owners have.I wonder what they should do.Should they remake "The Devil Rides Out" as Mr Lee mentions on the DVD commentary for said film,or should the make a new film?
What do you think......

Paul
I like the idea of a remake of TDRO,as Chris himself points out it would benefit greatly from the new SFX availible, and it's a great film anyway(my favourite). How about giving Tim Burton the job as helmer, that would be interesting.I think many modern directors would be falling over each other to direct a Hammer production...

What do you think?

I think Hammer should make new films, but If they were to remake an old Hammer film then I think it should be something that didnt star Mr.Lee but will this time round! e.g. The Vampire Lovers

I also think they should avoid the computer graphics because that stuff just looks fake.

Yes Charles C, i agree with you totally.
I´m also a fan of the good old movie without any special effects or computer graphics.

But do you really think that in those days it is possible to entertain the people without that technical stuff ???

I mean look at the video-game and computer generations.....!!!! There you can see what they really want and need.
Face the fact , that the good old movie time is over !

If I would be responsible for a movie , i would try to make a compromise....the golden middle way. I would take care that the talent and the actor´s quality is always the most important point. And maybe later in the end also a bit computer stuff.
But I really would try to avoid that the special effects will rule and controll the whole movie.

Hhmmm...maybe some years later there will be no need for any actors at all. That means, that a  computer will create all the actors and actress ......oh lord ..what a horrible nightmare.

Hi Steffi,

Yeah, I'm not really sure how a real movie would fare these days either, in the goofey world of video games and computer graphics!  But if all they make is garbage, then why bother?  (Ya know what I mean?)

But I do agree that the two could be combined--but the computer effects would have to be done a lot better than that trashy mummy film which escaped in the last year or two!

I think that a good script and truly gifted actors can surpass special effects any day. Two stories that seem tailor made for a Hammer treatment, to me, are M.R. James' "Casting The Runes" and Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes". Each tale has been made into a movie in past; however, the James story definitely got the better end of that deal. The 1958 adaption, CURSE OF THE DEMON, was a stylish and suspenseful film, shot in black and white. Jacques Tourneur directed. I would like to see a remake with Christopher Lee as the sceptical psychologist, originally played by Dana Andrews. The demonic adversary might be well played by Anthony Hopkins or even John Rhys-Davies. SOMETHING WICKED would just HAVE to have Mr. Lee cast as Mr. Dark. David Strathairn (DOLORES CLAIBORNE, A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN) is an actor I think would do an outstanding job as the aging father, Charles Halloway. If properly done, movies like these can succeed. Look at the success enjoyed by the film, THE SIXTH SENSE. That's what I believe Hammer should strive for. And as for a remake of THE DEVIL RIDES OUT, please DO.

A "Devil Rides Out" remake looks very likely. See this piece at  Empire Online. The original was truly fabulous and I find the thought of Mr Lee playing the same role as in the original very exciting.

As for "Curse of the Demon" (aka "Night of the Demon" ), RebeccaD, it is, indeed, a stylish and let me say, wonderful movie. As with "the Wicker Man", I don't know how a remake could improve it. However, if Mr Lee did have a role in a remake, perhaps he could add a Lord Summerisle-type distinguished villainy to the Dr Karswell character?

The related news stories at the end of the Empire article mentioned in my post above are well worth checking out. They both relate to Christopher Lee.

Miker, thanks for the link. I shall cross my fingers and hope to see "The Devil Rides Out" come galloping back with Mr. Lee, of course.

As for "Curse Of The Demon", it is one of my favorite films. If one remains true to the story, I stick to my casting of Dr. Karswell. However, I agree that an interpretation of that character by Mr. Lee would be equally intriguing. In my opinion, remaking films of this quality does not necessarily demand an improvement over the original. Rather, it should strive to equal and celebrate the original. There are so many fine films that young people have never seen, and may never take the time to explore on their own. A fresh retelling of a worthy tale may give them the incentive to view the classic version, as well.

If they got round to a remake of The Devil Rides Out who would you like to see playing the part of Simon and Rex and Mocata?
I'm not sure myself, but i think Jude Law might be good as Simon,Mocata is a real hard one as Charles Gray was simply sensational.

What do you guys think?

How about Alan Rickman for Mocata?  Of course, Anthony Hopkins would be another choice. I'd go for Johnny Depp or Joaquin Phoenix as Simon.
