For all you fans of Mario Bava and his work, there's a new book coming out Fall 2001 called MARIO BAVA--ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK by Tim Lucas (of Video Watchdog fame).
Looks exciting and very promising! The info included: The story of Bava's life and careers as director, cameraman, and special effects artist; interviews with more than 60 actors, co-workers, friends and family members; a definitive study of each of his films; production histories; cast bios; and critical analysis.
Also: never before published photos, including the ONLY color shot taken on the set of BLACK SUNDAY; original Bava storyboards and artwork (some in full color); Bava's secret filmography; his uncredited works as director, cameraman, and special effects artist.
There's also a running commentary by Bava himself!

I'd heard something about this book and must say I was quite enthusiastic about it until I spotted the list price for it on the Announcements page at the Video Watchdog site. Here is the pricing info as found there:
Signed Hardcover List Price $120
Pre-Publication Price (until 6/30/01):
$97 USA; $115 Outside USA (includes postage)
While I can appreciate the costs inherent in producing a book for a limited market, that price is somewhat steep! I love Bava and enjoy Lucas' approach to his work, but I'm not sure I can justify that chunk of change.
Cheers,

I don't disagree with Charles on the price, but just incase anyone wants to try to get it at the pre-publication cost of $97., the time for that has now been further extended to Sept. 30, 2001.

I must be losing it. How I missed Carmen's posted price and contact info is beyond me. Sorry for the redundant posting.
I'd swear that wasn't there when I originally posted my comments...honest! |

Charles:
No, you're not losing it! My second posting wasn't there initially.
We probably just posted at the same time, and mine happened to come through first.
In any case, if anyone has received this book already and would like to share some initial impressions, please do.
Carmen
PS I just love these little animated characters!:bounce:

I must say that for me, this will be the book of the year. Tim's been working on this for over a decade, and the results are staggering. Much of the price is due to a smaller run then usual for most books amd all of the color photos. it's also over 700 pages. I'm also almost positive that he did an interview with Mr. Lee regarding his work with Bava.

I've only seen Black Sunday and Twitch of the Death Nerve. What are some of the other best Bava movies I should watch?

inkybrown....Youve seen Black Sunday so theres nothing else to say or see!!One of The Greatest horror film ever and his debut no less(although he did direct parts of i,Vampiri) ...If you like Hammer films I would recommend Kill,Baby Kill. A great Gothic film and one of his bests. Other than that Black Sabbath is a must for the Boris Karloff segmant alone. That is a real must see.You wil be hard pressed to find a book about films with anything negative to say about Black Sabbath. As a Christopher Lee fan see The Whip and the Body its a nice gothic ghost story with great sets. Also i personally like Planet of the Vampires its a real good sci fi film that really predates Alien. This film is on dvd for a real cheap price. Its worth checking out. In my opinion those are his best films although he also directed Chris Lee in Hercules and the Haunted World ....but i have as of yet to see it

Mario Bava--the master of funeral lyricism...
The Whip and the Body(1963)
Lisa and the Devil(1972)
RabidDogs(1974)
Blood and Black Lace(1964)
Herclues in the Haunted World(1961)
Black Sunday(1960)
Kill Baby, Kill(1966)
Either one of these should do. Most of these are avaible on DVD or VHS, Bava's "Hercules" will be released on DVD some time later THIS year.
