I finally watched it last night. It is a good film--and though I've read some critics karping about the new twists they added to the vampire myth (i.e., they don't have to sleep by day in coffins; transformation of evil people into vampires is basically instantaneous; and good people who die from vampires don't become ones

Overall, a good, entertaining film from Hammer's later period. And definitely, Cushing's turn as the religious fanatic shouldn't be missed. By the way, I've always wondered if this is the film Mr. Cushing referred to in an interview I saw with him once where he said that in one film he killed the hero, the heroine,
and the monster.
I found the "additions" to the vampire mythology hard to take, myself. Afterall, burning was the preferred mode of disposal, traditionally. The stake was merely to hold the body down and prevent it from rising. Burning finsished the job once and for all. No body -- no vampire.
But hey, it's a movie. Not a treatise on folklore.
