I think that a good script and truly gifted actors can surpass special effects any day. Two stories that seem tailor made for a Hammer treatment, to me, are M.R. James' "Casting The Runes" and Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes". Each tale has been made into a movie in past; however, the James story definitely got the better end of that deal. The 1958 adaption, CURSE OF THE DEMON, was a stylish and suspenseful film, shot in black and white. Jacques Tourneur directed. I would like to see a remake with Christopher Lee as the sceptical psychologist, originally played by Dana Andrews. The demonic adversary might be well played by Anthony Hopkins or even John Rhys-Davies. SOMETHING WICKED would just HAVE to have Mr. Lee cast as Mr. Dark. David Strathairn (DOLORES CLAIBORNE, A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN) is an actor I think would do an outstanding job as the aging father, Charles Halloway. If properly done, movies like these can succeed. Look at the success enjoyed by the film, THE SIXTH SENSE. That's what I believe Hammer should strive for. And as for a remake of THE DEVIL RIDES OUT, please DO.
