The Silmarillion also gives a little brief insight on the fall of Saruman. His betrayal of the people of Middle Earth. He grew in his lore of the Rings, and soon came to admire Sauron in a twisted sense; rather than seeing him as an adversary. Thus in secret, he began seeking for the Ring. All the while, he was telling Gandalf and the White Council that he felt the Ring would never again be found in Middle Earth. Also, once the Nazgul were set abroad again he withdrew into Isengard and strengthened the tower because he was afraid. I wonder if Sauron really knew Gandalf was playing both sides for his own ends?
